JVC GR-AX841 VHS-C Camcorder. While this camcorder is far from the best on the market, it has two advantages to it. First, being a VHS camcorder, its tapes can be viewed almost anywhere using the included tape adapter. Second, this camcorder is reasonably priced for anyone just starting out. The drawbacks between this and the camcorders below is that VHS has a lower video quality, and also this camcorder does not have a side LCD screen for viewing what you are recording. All viewing has to be done through the viewfinder.

Sony CCDTR416 8mm Handycam Video Camera Recorder. This camcorder is one step above the JVC. This Sony 8mm camera has many of the same features of the JVC above, but it also has a stronger zoom, infrared night video capability, and other features. This is a good universal camcorder. It also does not have a side LCD and the 8mm makes sharing video a little more difficult. Also, while this camera records better at night, the infrared feature only works best for objects within 20 feet.

Sony DCRTRV310 Handycam Digital Video Camera. This model of digital video camera also records on Hi 8mm tapes. Some of the main features is a 3.5" LCD screen, digital image stabilization, and a 360x zoom. Keep in mind, the digital zoom magnification is not as important as the optical zoom magnification. When one goes beyond the optical zoom's abilities, the picture becomes very blocky. This line of digital cameras also will function as digital still cameras. This allows you to take digital pictures for direct transfer to your computer for output to the Internet or other source.
